SPD - Will the Midnite SPD protect against Power Company Surges?
Last Updated 6 years ago

While the name SPD, Surge Protection Device seems to imply that it will protect sensitive electronic equipment from surges caused by stand-by generators and power company substation switching, this is not true.  The SPD is designed to clamp the high voltage "spark" caused by a close lightning strike. The better name might be Spark Protection Device.  While some power line surges can be two times the line voltage or more, and raise havoc with equipment, they fall below the clamping voltage of the Midnite SPDs.

No Surge Protection Device can withstand the energy of a direct Lightning strike, if this happens a lot of damage will be done and most likley the Midnite SPD will be vaporized along with any other electronics on the circuit.
